The Australian Greyhound Racing Calendar: Every Major Race Month by Month
Racing Culture · 9 min read · Updated October 2026
Australian greyhound racing runs 364 nights a year, but the betting year has a rhythm: feature-race peaks, seasonal carnival surges and quiet winter troughs. Knowing the calendar sharpens both your punting and your bankroll planning.
The shape of the year
Racing happens everywhere, always — but wagering concentrates on metropolitan night meetings (Wentworth Park in Sydney, The Meadows and Sandown in Melbourne, Albion Park in Brisbane, Angle Park in Adelaide, Cannington in Perth) plus the Hobart and Launceston cards in Tasmania. Group 1 features cluster in autumn and spring, bookended by the summer sprint carnivals.
January–February: summer sprints
The new year opens hot. Sydney's summer features dominate — historically headlined by the Group 1 Paws of Thunder over 520m at Wentworth Park — while Victorian sprint features build towards autumn. UK and Irish form also peaks: the English Derby build-up and Irish open races give Australian punters big international cards through the European winter.
March: Sydney's big month
March is Wentworth Park's showcase, headlined by the Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic over 520m. Autumn features across Victoria and Queensland fill the surrounding weeks, and bookmakers roll out enhanced odds and protest specials on the big cards. This is one of the year's best months for feature-race value.
April: The Meadows takes centre stage
Melbourne's autumn peaks with the Group 1 Sapphire Crown (515m) at The Meadows — the south's richest sprint feature — alongside the Temlee, one of the most prestigious sprints in the Victorian calendar. Expect strong fields, big pools and heavy market attention.
May–June: winter lull (sort of)
The Group 1 calendar pauses but turnover doesn't: winter cards are smaller, fields thinner and favourites more reliable — a quietly profitable stretch for disciplined place and exotics players. Queensland and Western Australian racing hums along, and the European season builds towards its summer peaks.
July–August: winter features and the UK summer
Hobart's winter features and the annual pilgrimage of Tasmanian racing give the mid-year texture, while in the UK the summer open-race season begins — category 1 events like the Golden Jacket and the build-up to the English Derby. Australian mornings feature rich UK cards.
September–October: spring heats up
Spring launches with the Geelong Cup and Victorian provincial features, building towards November. Irish racing enters its richest phase with the Irish Greyhound Derby in September — one of the world's great races, increasingly followed by Australian punters.
November: the biggest month in the sport
Everything converges on Sandown: the Group 1 Melbourne Cup over 515m in late November is Australian greyhound racing's richest and most famous night, with a first prize above $500,000. Around it cluster the Sandown Cup and the great staying features, the Harrison-Dawson build in December, and bookmaker promotions at their peak. Handle your bankroll accordingly: November is the best card quality of the year and the easiest month to over-bet.
December: the Christmas run-in
Metropolitan features wind down toward Christmas, with the Harrison-Dawson at Sandown a December highlight and festive novelty promotions across the bookmakers. Racing continues every day — the sport doesn't sleep for the holidays, and nor do the night-owl punters following the UK.
Using the calendar
Three practical applications. Bankroll: stake bigger through the March–April and November peaks when your edge (and the pools) are largest; contract in the June trough. Preparation: each Group 1 has its own form profile — the Melbourne Cup rewards fresh 515m speed, the staying features reward genuine stamina — so study [the race pages](/races) in the weeks before. International rhythm: when Australia's calendar sleeps, Europe's wakes; the serious year-round punter alternates hemispheres.
