Australia Greyhound Racing

The complete guide to Australian greyhound racing — every state, the major tracks, the Group 1 calendar and how Australians bet on the dogs.

The heartland of the sport

Australia is one of the great homes of greyhound racing. The sport is conducted in every state and territory, with more than 60 tracks operating from Darwin to Hobart, and it anchors the betting menus of every Australian bookmaker. Metropolitan night meetings in Sydney (Wentworth Park), Melbourne (The Meadows and Sandown), Brisbane (Albion Park), Adelaide (Angle Park) and Perth (Cannington) are broadcast nationally and attract the bulk of wagering turnover, while a thriving country circuit gives the sport its depth.

Racing by state

New South Wales is the largest jurisdiction, headlined by Wentworth Park's Wednesday and Saturday night meetings and the famous Friday night tradition at Dapto. Victoria hosts the sport's two richest races — the Melbourne Cup and Australian Cup at The Meadows — plus Sandown's elite programs. Queensland's Albion Park anchors the north, with strong provincial clubs at Ipswich and Capalaba. South Australia races at Angle Park with Murray Bridge, Gawler and Mount Gambier leading the country ranks. Western Australia's Cannington stages the Friday night feature, supported by Mandurah and the country circuit. Tasmania's Elwick and Mowbray tracks are beloved institutions, headlined by the Hobart Thousand. The ACT races at Canberra's Symonston complex, and Darwin's Winnellie Park brings the sport to the Top End.

Industry changes to know

Two regulatory changes matter for punters in the mid-2020s. First, New Zealand ended commercial greyhound racing on 31 July 2026 — Kiwi-bred dogs now race exclusively in Australia. Second, Tasmania is phasing out greyhound racing by 30 June 2029 under legislation passed in December 2025; a breeding ban took effect on 1 January 2026, but racing continues at Hobart's Elwick, Launceston's Mowbray and Devonport until the closure date — and the Hobart Thousand remains on the calendar in the meantime.

The Group 1 calendar

Australia's Group 1 greyhound races form a season-long procession: the Melbourne Cup and Australian Cup at The Meadows, the Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park, the Brisbane Cup at Albion Park, the Adelaide Cup at Angle Park, the Perth Cup at Cannington, the Hobart Thousand at Elwick, plus the Topgun and Geelong Gold Cup. Each carries the prestige of decades and attracts the best greyhounds from every state.

How Australians bet on greyhounds

TAB outlets, licensed bookmakers and betting exchanges all offer greyhound markets. The most popular bets are the quaddie, trifecta and quinella, reflecting a culture of exotic play over straight win betting. Fixed odds, tote dividends and same-race multis are available on every metropolitan meeting, and most bookmakers stream every Australian race live to funded accounts.

Form and grading

Australian greyhounds race in grades from Maiden to Grade 5, Free For All and Group level, with dogs moving up and down based on performances. Form guides published by the major providers show positions, margins, sectional times, box history and breeding — the raw material every punter needs. Learning to read them well is the subject of our form analysis guides.
